In 2007, Heartland signed a Renewable Energy Purchase Power Agreement with Babcock & Brown to purchase the full output of a 51 megawatt wind project near Wessington Springs.

With the Wessington Springs Wind Farm fully functional in 2009, Heartland becomes the first utility in South Dakota with 20% of its power supply coming from renewable resources.
Per a memorandum of understanding between Heartland and the state of South Dakota, the wind farm will provide renewable energy to the University of South Dakota and South Dakota State University, making the two universities the first in the Midwest to be powered with 100% renewable energy. |
