Energy efficiency programs are key, economically effective, near-term actions to reduce greenhouse emissions.

Initially, Heartland will develop aggressive marketing activities for energy efficiency initiatives for our wholesale Customers, including financial and other appropriate incentives for the following:

  1. Installation of Energy Star rated lighting and appliances in new commercial and residential buildings
  2. Use of Energy Star rated lighting and appliances for replacements in existing buildings
  3. Use of Certified Green Building Codes
  4. Distribution of energy efficiency educational materials to end-use commercial and residential consumers
  5. Promoting energy efficiency and use of renewable resources for public buildings
The above five activities (including tools to measure the estimated energy savings resulting from their implementation) will be developed and implemented by October 1, 2008.

Between October 1, 2008 and October 1, 2009, Heartland will:

  1. Seek partnerships with our Customers to develop training programs for local contractors on the use of certified Green Building Codes for new construction as well as remodeling of residential and commercial buildings.
  2. Seek partnerships with our Customers to provide industrial Customers with resources to use energy more efficiently.
  3. Seek partnerships to promote the retail sales of energy efficient products throughout the service territory of our Customers.
Heartland will provide the resources necessary to accomplish these goals and objectives in a timely and cost effective manner, including, but not limited to, staffs and administrative resources.

Heartland will make annual reports to our Board of Directors, the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission, and the general public on the scope of our programs, as well as our progress toward reaching these important energy efficiency and environmental goals.
