The Power of Forward Thinking

Generating electricity through coal-fired, nuclear and wind power

Over the years, Heartland has maintained a progressive attitude toward power supply.  Formed to provide low-cost supplemental electric power to the area when resources were scarce, we played a significant role in the development of Laramie River Station, the nation’s largest, most efficient generation station of its time.  When electric shortage became a surplus and energy conservation was a significant concern, we were able to sell our surplus power, keeping our rates competitive and saving our Customers thousands of dollars.

To meet the growing needs of Customers today, we offer a diverse power supply portfolio that includes coal-fired, nuclear and wind generation.  Heartland also has access to key wholesale markets, allowing us to purchase and sell energy when needed.

Much of our power is delivered over the Integrated Transmission System (IS), a high-voltage transmission system that covers a seven-state area and consists of over 8,500 miles of lines.  Heartland co-owns the IS with Western Area Power Administration and Basin Electric Power Cooperative.
