The Power of Forward Thinking

Generating electricity through coal-fired, nuclear and wind power

In order to meet the growing needs of our customers, Heartland maintains a diverse power supply portfolio. Our baseload resources include coal-fired generation from Laramie River Station near Wheatland, Wyoming and the future Whelan Energy Center Unit 2, under construction near Hastings, Nebraska.  Other resources include nuclear power generated at Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville, Nebraska, renewable energy from the Wessington Springs Wind Energy Center near Wessington Springs, South Dakota and peaking sources located in our customer communities.

Our power is delivered over the Integrated System (IS), a high-voltage transmission system that covers a seven-state area and consists of over 8,000 miles of lines.  Heartland jointly owns IS with Western Area Power Administration and Basin Electric Power Cooperative.
